Sailor Moon

Good morning. It is 5:15 am and I am waking up to birds chirping and cooing outside my open window. Summer is joyous. I woke up first to the sound of sneakers in the hall. Two of my roommates are going to a destination wedding in Mexico this weekend and one has been waking up before the sun to hit the gym to get ready for his beachy getaway. I missed dance class last night to talk to my dad on the phone, so no regrets but feeling a bit antsy this morning. I think I’m going to go on a long walk to one of my favorite coffee shops in Williamsburg. It will take me well over an hour to get there so I’ll leave a little before 7. It’s the coffee shop where you have to awkwardly hover in order to get a table. It’s not fun at all, so I’ve told myself I’ll only go there if it’s first thing in the morning when it (hopefully) hasn’t filled up yet. Things you become accustomed to in the big city haha.

Bom Dia. São 5h15 e estou acordando com os pássaros cantando um arrulho do lado de fora da minha janela aberta. O verão é alegre. Acordei primeiro com o som de tênis no corredor. Dois dos meus colegas de quarto estão indo para um casamento no México neste fim de semana e um está acordando antes do sol para ir à academia para se preparar para sua escapadela na praia. Perdi a aula de dança ontem à noite para falar com meu pai no telefone, então não me arrependo, mas estou um pouco impaciente esta manhã. Acho que vou fazer uma longa caminhada até uma das minhas cafeterias favoritas em Williamsburg. Levarei bem mais de uma hora para chegar lá, então sairei um pouco antes das 7. É a cafeteria onde você precisa pairar desajeitadamente para conseguir uma mesa. Não é nada divertido, então eu disse a mim mesmo que só vou lá se for a primeira hora da manhã, quando (espero) ainda não estiver cheio. Coisas que você se acostuma na cidade grande haha.

Moved to Brooklyn

Bom dia! Sorry for the delay but your girl was busy moving to Brooklyn! If you thought my travel week was crazy, last week would have blown your mind. I was working, Ida flooded NY (and the airport) and I moved in the middle of all of it. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to Chinatown … though I’m sure I will frequent it. My favorite nail lady is there so I’ll probably be back next week. I had this weekend off and explored quite a bit, including going to my first live show since the pandemic began. It feels so good to be exploring a new area … like a tourist in my own city. It’s interesting how different the vibe in Brooklyn is. There is such a nice mix of people and the fashion is fun and funky, and very inspiring. I spent a lot of time in Brooklyn this summer but it feels very different to live there, which is perhaps unsurprising. I feel like it will be easier to make friends in my neighborhood. People smile at you when you pass them! My small town heart fills right up every time. Yesterday I went to see ‘Together’ at the movies with a friend. It’s about a couple/family in the UK getting through the lockdown. It’s really fascinating to see the art that is being created in response to the strangeness of the last year and a half. The beauty of our human need to share, explain, and process through art is my favorite thing about us. I recommend the movie. It puts words to feelings we all share(d) but perhaps didn’t articulate. And of course we watched the movie with masks on, so it’s not as though we’re done with this stage. We’re still within the strangeness.

Bom Dia! Desculpe pela demora, mas sua garota estava ocupada se mudando para o Brooklyn! Se você pensasse que minha semana de viagem foi uma loucura, a semana passada teria explodido sua mente. Eu estava trabalhando, Ida inundou NY (e o aeroporto) e me mudei no meio de tudo isso. Foi agridoce dizer adeus a Chinatown ... embora eu tenha certeza de que irei freqüentá-la. Minha manicure favorita está lá, então provavelmente estarei de volta na próxima semana. Tive este fim de semana de folga e explorei um pouco, incluindo ir ao meu primeiro show ao vivo desde o início da pandemia. É tão bom explorar uma nova área ... como um turista na minha própria cidade. É interessante como a vibração no Brooklyn é diferente. Há uma mistura tão legal de pessoas e a moda é divertida, descolada e muito inspiradora. Passei muito tempo no Brooklyn neste verão, mas é muito diferente morar lá, o que talvez não seja surpreendente. Acho que será mais fácil fazer amigos no meu bairro. As pessoas sorriem para você quando você passa por elas! Meu coração de cidade pequena se enche o tempo todo. Ontem fui ver ‘Juntos’ no cinema com um amigo. É sobre um casal / família no Reino Unido superando o bloqueio. É realmente fascinante ver a arte que está sendo criada em resposta à estranheza do último ano e meio. A beleza de nossa necessidade humana de compartilhar, explicar e processar por meio da arte é o que mais gosto em nós. Eu recomendo o filme. Coloca em palavras sentimentos que todos nós compartilhamos, mas talvez não tenhamos articulado. E é claro que assistimos ao filme com máscaras, então não é como se tivéssemos acabado com este estágio. Ainda estamos na estranheza.

Busy Day

Yesterday I got up early and went to the gym (my booty is so sore today!) and afterwards I headed to the Uruguiana market. It is an area in Centro where you can buy stuff for way cheaper than you can find it in Zona Sul. I was on a mission to find more workout clothes because I either go to the gym or dance class almost every day and I go through my workout gear really quickly. It’s also way too hot to wear long leggings and so I’ve had to retire all of my leggings until further notice. I found a shop with some sweet ladies that helped me pick out a couple new pairs of shorts and a sports bra. Afterwards I headed to Ipanema and then Leblon to teach a couple one-on-one English classes. I stopped in at Coffeetown and had a super delicious Chai Latte and read my book as well. After that I headed home and had a nice chat with my Mamma. Today I’m headed to the beach. I’m going to go grab lunch beforehand and then hopefully I can find a bike and ride that direction …

Ontem me levantei cedo e fui para a academia (minha bunda é tão dolorido hoje!). E depois fui para o mercado na Uruguiana. É uma área no Centro onde você pode comprar coisas mais barata do que você pode encontrar na Zona Sul. Eu estava em uma missão para encontrar mais roupas de treino, porque eu vou para a aula de ginástica ou dança quase todos os dias e eu uso a minha roupa do treino rapidamente. Também é quente demais para usar leggings longos então eu tive que retirar todas as minhas leggings até novo aviso. Eu encontrei uma loja com algumas senhoras simpáticas que me ajudaram a escolher dois pares de shorts novos e um sutiã esportivo. Depois fui para Ipanema e depois para o Leblon para dar aulas particulares de inglês. Parei em Coffeetown e tomei um super delicioso Chai Latte e li meu livro também. Depois disso, fui para casa e tive uma boa conversa com minha mãe. Hoje eu estou indo para a praia. Eu vou pegar o almoço antes e espero encontrar uma bicicleta e seguir nessa direção ...
