Crepes for Dinner

Hello loves! I feel like I have quite a bit to report:

I will officially be going back to work in July, which I am very excited about. I just got the call yesterday.

I took my last state board esthetician exam and now I’m in the three/four week waiting period to find out the results. Why it takes that long to grade a scantron is baffling to me, but hey.

I went on a quick trip to Charleston, pictures to come.

A group of friends started a summer workout challenge which I joined … $20 buy in and a commitment of at least three 30 minute workouts per week. There is a $5 penalty for each missed workout - no two-a-day workouts or rollovers. If you have the most workouts at the end you win ten whole dollars haha, but if you have the least you pay an extra $30. All the money (which is almost $500) will be spent on a collective night out at the end of the summer. Sounds fun right?! I’ll let you know how it goes.

This last week was weirdly cold for it being the end of May, but today is the first day of June, one of my favorite months, and the sun is back!

Olá amores! Sinto que tenho muito a relatar:

Eu estarei oficialmente voltando ao trabalho em julho, o que estou muito entusiasmado. Acabei de receber a ligação ontem.

Fiz meu último exame de esteticista do conselho estadual e agora estou no período de espera de três/quatro semanas para saber os resultados. Por que leva tanto tempo para classificar um scantron é desconcertante para mim, mas é assim que as coisas são.

Fiz uma viagem rápida para Charleston, fotos por vir.

Um grupo de amigos começou um desafio de treino de verão ao qual me juntei ... $ 20 de buy-in e um compromisso de pelo menos três treinos de 30 minutos por semana. Há uma penalidade de $ 5 para cada treino perdido - nenhum treino de dois por dia ou rollovers. Se você fizer mais exercícios no final, você ganha dez dólares inteiros, haha, mas se tiver o mínimo, você paga $ 30 extras. Todo o dinheiro (que é de quase US $ 500) será gasto em uma noite coletiva no final do verão. Parece divertido, certo ?! Eu vou deixar você saber como foi.

Esta última semana estava estranhamente fria por ser final de maio, mas hoje é o primeiro dia de junho, um dos meus meses favoritos, e o sol está de volta!

Hey hey. Writing to you from Lower Manhattan. I’m having a bit of lunch after running errands this morning. I’m meeting a friend in Central Park in a bit for a little picnic so I’m not filling up too much. I need to find a Trader Joe’s to pick up some snacks or drinks. I have been feeling a bit sluggish the last few days so it feels nice to be out of the house and social. Have a wonderful rest of your day!

Vou encontrar uma amiga no Central Park daqui a pouco para um pequeno piquenique, então não estou enchendo muito. Preciso encontrar um Trader Joe's para comprar alguns lanches ou bebidas. Tenho me sentido um pouco lento nos últimos dias, então é bom estar fora de casa e estar socialmente. Tenha um ótimo resto de dia!

Last Day Home

Hi sweet thangs! Tomorrow will be my last day in Chico for a bit. I can’t believe how fast this trip has gone but part of me feels like it has been the perfect amount of time. It occurred to me today that I still haven’t had Hula’s, an amazing Hawaiian grill in town, so I may have to squeeze that in tomorrow haha. Also, I get to take one last dance class here tomorrow night with yet another guest teacher, this time from Mali. Dancing is the perfect way to be sent off! Just a heads up that I may not have much time to blog in the next couple months, but I will do my very best to give you little updates. Exciting things ahead! These photos were taken last week on a lovely girls’ day with Julia. We had brunch, went shopping, and stumbled on a carnival that hadn’t opened yet! Today has been v chill. I just got back from getting my nails done and now I’m going to start packing. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Oi coisas doces! Amanhã será meu último dia em Chico um pouco. Eu não posso acreditar o quão rápido esta viagem foi, mas parte de mim parece que tem sido a quantidade perfeita de tempo. Ocorreu-me hoje que eu ainda não tinha Hula's, uma grade havaiana incrível na cidade, então eu posso ter que espremer isso amanhã haha. Além disso, eu vou ter uma última aula de dança aqui amanhã à noite com outro professor convidado, desta vez do Mali. Dançar é a maneira perfeita de ser expulso! Apenas um aviso que eu posso não ter muito tempo para blogar nos próximos meses, mas eu farei o meu melhor para lhe dar pequenas atualizações. Coisas emocionantes pela frente! Essas fotos foram tiradas na semana passada em um lindo dia das meninas com Julia. Nós tivemos brunch, fomos fazer compras e tropeçamos em um carnaval que ainda não tinha aberto! Hoje foi muito chill. Acabei de fazer um manicure e agora vou começar a fazer as malas. Espero que todos tenham tido um fim de semana maravilhoso!

Say A Little Prayer For You

Hi there babes. I’m currently sitting in front of the fan, melting slowly in this sultry tropical heat. It is officially summer! This week my head has been in the clouds a bit. I’m trying to remember to stay grounded, appreciating that I am here in Brasil after all these years of saudades, and enjoying the hustle. My dance class keeps me in-tune. I could live here forever just because of that class. Last night two of the younger dancers in class performed something they have been rehearsing and it was incredible … African dance meets modern meets spoken word poetry. I teared up with gratitude that I was in the room, across the world from where I was nurtured, being nurtured by dance as a grown woman.  I feel so lucky to be who I am where I am in moments like that. I hope you are all having a lovely week! 

Olá bebês. Atualmente estou sentada na frente do ventilador, derretendo lentamente nesse calor tropical quente. É oficialmente verão! Esta semana minha cabeça esteve nas nuvens um pouco. Eu estou tentando lembrar de ficar ancorado, apreciando que estou aqui no Brasil depois de todos esses anos de saudades, e curtindo a agitação. Minha aula de dança me mantém em sintonia. Eu poderia viver aqui para sempre só por causa dessa aula. Ontem à noite, dois dos jovens bailarinos em sala de aula apresentaram algo que estavam ensaiando e foi incrível… a dança africana encontra a palavra moderna e a poesia da palavra falada. Eu comovei com gratidão que eu estava na sala, do outro lado do mundo, de onde eu fui nutrida, sendo nutrida pela dança como uma mulher adulta. Eu me sinto com muita sorte por ser quem eu sou onde estou em momentos como esse. Espero que todos vocês tenham uma ótima semana!

Try a Little Tenderness

Hey hey. Yesterday was a bit of a strange day. In the morning I heard that a fire had broken out near my hometown, Chico, where my parents and most of my siblings still live. The fire was spreading quickly due to high winds and the sky had already turned black and orange. I woke up this morning to news that the fire completely wiped out the closest town to Chico, named Paradise. Thirty-thousand people lost everything in one day. So far I haven’t heard about any fatalities, which is wonderful, but I know so many people who have lost almost all their possessions. I feel distracted and heavy today. My heart is there and I will continue to pray that the fire is contained and hopefully stopped soon. Mother Nature! She’s a force!

Oi gente. Ontem foi um dia estranho. De manhã, ouvi que havia um incêndio perto da minha cidade natal, Chico, onde meus pais e a maioria dos meus irmãos ainda moram. O fogo estava se espalhando rapidamente devido aos ventos fortes e o céu já estava negro e laranja. Acordei esta manhã com a notícia de que o incêndio destruiu completamente a cidade mais próxima de Chico, chamada Paradise. Trinta mil pessoas perderam tudo em um dia. Até agora não ouvi falar de nenhuma fatalidade, o que é maravilhoso, mas conheço tantas pessoas que perderam quase todas as suas posses. Eu me sinto distraído e pesado hoje. Meu coração está lá e eu continuarei a orar para que o fogo seja contido e esperançosamente parado em breve. Mãe Natureza! Ela é uma força!

Small Update

Top - Forever 21

Hi beauties! I am just checking in to say that I probably won’t be able to blog much until I have my own place. The hostel I’m staying in is FULL and I’d rather keep my computer and camera in my suitcase for now. I’m a Starbucks right now and the internet is so slow. Hopefully I can upload a photo to this post! Anyways, I got a sore throat yesterday and have stocked up on Brazilian medicine. I have a couple leads on places but nothing concrete yet. I’ve had a lot of fun getting to know the people at the hostel. They’re from all over Brazil and the rest of the world and I’ve gotten you to speak a lot of Portuguese and in-turn helped some people with their English when they ask. My to-do list for the next couple days is:

1. Continue the apartment search

2. Look into jobs

3. Find the old dance studio I used to go to

4. Sleep (easier said that done in a hostel)

5. Get a Brazilian phone - not sure if I want to get a pay-as-you-go phone or one with some internet capabilities

6. Beach!

Oi belezas! Estou apenas checando para dizer que provavelmente não vou poder blogar muito até ter meu próprio lugar. A pousada em que estou hospedado é COMPLETA e prefiro manter meu computador e minha câmara na mala por enquanto. Estou em um Starbucks agora e a internet é tão lenta. Espero poder enviar uma foto para este post! De qualquer forma, eu tenho uma dor de garganta ontem e estocado sobre a medicina brasileira. Eu tenho um casal leva em lugares, mas nada concreto ainda. Eu me diverti muito conhecendo as pessoas no albergue. Eles são de todo o Brasil e do resto do mundo e estou falando muito português e, em resposta, ajudou algumas pessoas com o inglês quando perguntaram. Minha lista de tarefas para os próximos dias é:

1. Continue a pesquisa de apartamentos

2. Procure empregos

3. Encontre o estúdio de dança que eu costumava ir

4. Sono (mais fácil disse que feito em um albergue)

5. Obtenha um telefone brasileiro - não tenho certeza se quero obter um telefone pré-pago ou um com alguns recursos de internet

6. Praia!

Olá! I am having a lazy morning … just caught up on last night’s episode of Insecure. Yesterday’s hike with Ceci was really nice. We hiked for about three hours in Upper Park. She lived in Brasil for three years so it’s so nice to talk to someone who understands where I’m at and how exciting this move is. The hike ended in a quick dip in the creek. The water has gotten so cold but it felt amazing after a long hike in the peak heat of the day. I don’t have as many plans this week. I leave in a week basically so the biggest thing on my agenda is just stocking up on things I may need … makeup and hot sauce topping the list :). Gotta have your priorities haha. I did an oil treatment on my hair overnight so I need to go wash it out. I used castor oil this time (last time I used coconut oil) and the consistency is so much thicker! It was kind of hard to work it through my hair, but it promotes hair growth so I thought I’d try it out. Chico is extremely dry and my skin and hair have been feeling the effects. Lots of moisturizing! But I’m about to be in ALL the humidity :))) 

Olá! Estou tendo uma manhã preguiçosa ... acabei de pegar o episódio de Inseguro da noite anterior. A caminhada de ontem com a Ceci foi muito legal. Nós caminhamos por cerca de três horas no Upper Park. Ela morou no Brasil por três anos, então é muito legal conversar com alguém que entende onde eu estou e como isso é emocionante. A caminhada terminou em um rápido mergulho no riacho. A água ficou tão fria, mas pareceu incrível depois de uma longa caminhada no calor do pico do dia. Eu não tenho tantos planos esta semana. Eu saio em uma semana, basicamente, então a maior coisa na minha agenda é apenas estocar coisas que eu possa precisar ... maquiagem e molho quente no topo da lista :). Tenho que ter suas prioridades haha. Eu fiz um tratamento com óleo no meu cabelo durante a noite, então eu preciso ir lavar. Eu usei óleo de mamona desta vez (da última vez eu usei óleo de coco) e a consistência é muito mais grossa! Foi difícil trabalhar com o meu cabelo, mas isso promove o crescimento do cabelo, então eu pensei em testá-lo. Chico é extremamente seco e minha pele e cabelos estão sentindo os efeitos. Muita hidratação! Mas eu estou com toda a umidade :)))

Busy Bee

Hey there loves! These photos were taken in my Mamma’s backyard yesterday. She always has a yard bursting with flowers and fruit, which definitely keeps the bees happy. Today she and I are having a lunch/sewing date. I bought an off-the-shoulder Hawaiian print dress at the thrift store last month with the intent of turning it into a matching crop-top and skirt set. My mom grew up partially in Spain and had to take a sewing class daily. As a result, she and all her sisters are amazing seamstresses. It’s a skill I wish I’d studied more from her, so I try to find little projects that she can help me with. Later today I am going to my old high school’s football game to watch my youngest brother Eli play baritone saxophone in the marching band. He is so musically talented! And in terms of my general state of mind … Brasil feels so close! Today I checked the weather app on my phone to compare and it doesn’t quite cover the week I will be there, but almost! Looks like high 70s/low 80s and mixture of thunder storms and of course, SUN! It’s so nice that I will just be diving into another summer and skipping the colder months here. Perfect timing ;).

Oi amores! Essas fotos foram tiradas no quintal de minha mãe ontem. Ela sempre tem um quintal repleto de flores e frutas, o que definitivamente deixa as abelhas felizes. Hoje ela e eu estamos tendo um almoço / data de costura. Eu comprei um vestido estampado havaiano sem mangas no brechó no mês passado com a intenção de transformá-lo em um top de colheita e saia combinando. Minha mãe cresceu parcialmente na Espanha e teve que fazer uma aula de costura diariamente. Como resultado, ela e todas as suas irmãs são incríveis costureiras. É uma habilidade que eu gostaria de ter estudado mais dela, então tento encontrar pequenos projetos que ela possa me ajudar. Mais tarde, hoje, vou ao jogo de futebol do meu antigo colégio para ver meu irmão mais novo, Eli, tocar saxofone barítono na banda marcial. Ele é tão talentoso musicalmente! E em termos do meu estado geral de espírito… o Brasil se sente tão próximo! Hoje eu verifiquei o aplicativo de previsão do tempo no meu telefone para comparar e ele não cobre a semana em que estarei lá, mas quase! Parece alta 70s / baixa 80s e mistura de trovoadas e claro, SOL! É tão legal que eu esteja mergulhando em outro verão e pulando os meses mais frios aqui. Momento ideal ;).

Back in Chico

I'm back in Northern California! I had an eventful drive home ... a pick-up truck isn't a great idea at 75 miles an hour with your whole life in the back ... and I'll leave it at that. I got home at four in the morning, said a brief and tired hello to my mom who had waited up for me, and then slept 'til almost noon today. Today we unpacked the truck and returned it and then headed to the 105th birthday party for the Chico Women's Club. My mom has been a board member for this historic group of women since 2002 and she makes me proud with how articulate, driven, and respected she is among the other members. She made a massive cake for the celebration, the largest version I've ever seen of her famous chocolate cake, decorated of course in flowers from the garden - a family tradition.  We dropped the rest of the cake off at the local homeless shelter before taking a quick dip in the creek nearby. I only had my nice nude heels with me so I walked to the creek barefoot which was a hot and stony path. My feet are feeling a bit raw. They used to be so tough! After eating a dinner of salad and tofu in the backyard we headed to the movies to see Crazy Rich Asians. It is such a good one! I feel like I packed a lot in considering I slept almost half the day away! It feels good and relaxing to be home, especially after a bit of a hectic move.

Estou de volta ao norte da Califórnia! Eu tive uma viagem movimentada para casa ... uma pick-up não é uma ótima idéia a 75 milhas por hora com toda a sua vida nas costas ... e eu vou deixar por isso mesmo. Cheguei em casa às quatro da manhã, disse um breve e cansado olá para a minha mãe que tinha esperado por mim, e depois dormi até quase meio-dia de hoje. Nós descompactamos o caminhão e o devolvemos e então fomos para a festa de aniversário de 105 anos do Chico Women's Club. Minha mãe é membro do conselho desse grupo histórico de mulheres desde 2002 e ela me deixa orgulhosa de como ela é articulada, motivada e respeitada entre os outros membros. Ela fez um enorme bolo para a celebração, a maior versão que eu já vi de seu famoso bolo de chocolate, decorado, claro, em flores do jardim - uma tradição familiar. Nós deixamos o resto do bolo fora no abrigo desabrigado local antes de dar um mergulho rápido no riacho próximo. Eu só tive meus saltos nus agradáveis omigo assim eu caminhei para o riacho descalço que era um caminho quente e pedregoso. Meus pés estão um pouco crus. Eles costumavam ser tão durões! Depois de comer um jantar de salada e tofu no quintal nós fomos ao cinema ver Crazy Rich Asians. É tão bom! Eu sinto como se eu tivesse embalado muito em considerar que dormi quase a metade do dia! É uma sensação boa e relaxante estar em casa, especialmente depois de um movimento frenético.
