As The Sun Rose

Hi beauties! I have been back from Bali for quite a bit but I still have some of these photos floating around. This was from a solo sunrise hike I did in Ubud. I got up early and walked through the town on the main street. The locals were having a market and it was refreshing to be one of the only foreigners in the mix. Bali can be overwhelmingly touristy so it was relieving to see that the Balinese people keep some things for themselves. The hike was lovely: lush and uphill. I was good and hungry for breakfast, made by our lovely Airbnb host, when I returned.

I haven’t worked much this week. Yesterday I didn’t leave the house or exercise so I woke up today ready to move my body in the sunshine! I took a long walk along the Hudson River to the grocery store while listening to the audiobook of Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. It seemed a fitting book for a girl trying to take it one day at a time. I picked up a few things for dinner and made baguette pizzas and a delicious kale salad. Normally I’m not a fan of raw kale, but I really liked this recipe thanks to the creamy vinegar dressing. I hope you are all doing well, staying healthy, and getting some fresh air when you can.

Oi belezas!

beijos

Birthday Girl

Good afternoon! I am currently in Fort Myers, Florida and the humidity is real! I tried to take a photo of my hotel view and had to be quick because the lens was fogging up so fast! There is supposedly a mini waterpark at the hotel so my friend Colleen and I are about to go find it! The sunny weather is such a nice surprise because yesterday the weather said it was going to storm. These photos were taken on my birthday just last week in the absolutely wonderful city of Oporto! What a dream …

Boa tarde!

New Apartment!

Hello hello!I am very happy to inform you that I have found an apartment here in Rio! The last two weeks I was staying at a hostel in Copacabana and though it was very fun and I met a lot of really nice people, it is SO nice to have my own room again. The location of the apartment in amazing: close to the botanical gardens and the lake. I would like to make walking along the lake a regular morning routine. It isn’t a touristy area as well so things are cheaper and it feels less hectic. I also have a little personal terrace off my room and there is a little patio off the living room, where these photos were taken. I was so tired yesterday after moving because I went out with some friends from the hostel to celebrate my last night there. It was a boat party that took us across the bay to Niterói, all the while playing music and serving caipirinhas. I had a great time dancing with everyone. The only downside was being stuck next to all the people who smoke cigarettes. I still have a cough after being sick so I’ve been trying to avoid being around smoke but there was nowhere to go that night haha. Dancing on a boat in the ocean was a great way to celebrate that I officially live here now! I’m so grateful. Now I need to go get some lunch and then some groceries (never go shopping hungry ;).

New Clairvaux Vineyard

Hi there! On Wednesday Jenelle, Kelly, Julia and I took a trip out to the New Clairvaux Vineyard, about 20 minutes outside of Chico. The wine was so delicious! I would have bought a bottle if I was staying in The States longer. The vineyard is also a monestary and is home to a small group of monks. The church on the property is absolutely beautiful! We got to listen to the monks sing and after they left we explored! We happened to be there while the man who designed and built the church was fixing something and he told us all about the history. It’s a relatively new church but the stones used to build it are over 200 years old and were originally imported from Spain. If you look closely there are symbols carved into the stone. He said the stone makers were paid per stone so they would mark the ones they had completed in order to be paid at the end of the week. The designer or “master mason” purposefully pointed these markings inwards and placed them at eye-level so this history could be remembered. Some places just have good vibes and this church was one of them. Buildings like this one, crafted with so much attention to detail, aren’t made often anymore. It was lovely to wander around with a little wine buzz ;).

happy sipping

feliz sorvendo

Just Lace

Funny, but after that last post about it being my day off I got a call from work asking me to cover for someone ... so yesterday was actually my first day off. I used to work in the morning but for the past couple months I have been working at night and it means that my sleep schedule is completely flipped. I really love getting to wake up when my body wants to. It's such a luxury! Today I walked to the gym, came back and made a particularly delicious lunch, and then took an hour-long nap before work. I feel like I have time for myself and it feels damn good. I'm savoring this, appreciating it. Also, literally everyone who came to my birthday get-together in Chico brought a bottle of wine so I've been indulging in them before bed ... tonight I sampled Julia's rosé and it was fucking delicious.

cheers to getting enough sleep & self care <3

Little Red Dress

Dress - Zara

Happy Halloween loves! I had all these plans to go to a Halloween dance party tonight but I feel like I'm getting sick and I'd rather kick whatever this is rather than risk making myself sicker. So instead, I cooked a healthy Indian dish for lunch, took a bath, then a nap, made myself a spinach and berry smoothie, and now I'm watching a nature documentary series on the Yellowstone thaw in bed. Quite an atypical Halloween, but thankfully I did plenty of celebrating with Lauren and Marina this weekend. One of my coworkers threw a party and it was so fun to see all of my work homies not only out of their work clothes, but decked out in crazy costumes. Luckily I don't work tomorrow so I can sleep in and hopefully get rid of this. My body does not like the cold which has always been so interesting to me since most of my ancestors (that I know of) came from pretty extreme cold. For some reason I'm just a heat-loving, tropical baby ... shrug*.

Gypsy Summer

Jacket - Zara | Swimsuit - Myra Swim | Choker - Lulus

Yup, a little sneak preview of the new place! I have been without internet this week (it's getting installed on Friday!) so I've been exploring the local coffee shop scene and renting movies to watch while I unpack. Today the maintenance guy fixed my closet bar so I can finally hang up my dresses. I now have two whole closets and I honestly don't know how I fit all these clothes in just one. I have SO many clothes and shoes. Not complaining but damn is it a bitch to move it all and reorganize! I've been traveling around all summer and living out of a suitcase so it's been like Xmas discovering all the things I've missed wearing and looking at. My place feels amazing. I think I am appreciative of what I have in a bigger and deeper way than ever before. Crazy how the universe just finds a way to teach you exactly what you need to understand.

Good omen update: when I was driving the Uhaul to my place for the first time, a monarch butterfly flew up the hood and then up the windshield. My family's Native culture believes that monarchs are a powerful sign of good luck, and I'd say so. I'm used to feeling lucky but these last few months put that in check a little bit. I think it's made me grateful for the good things rather than just expecting them. I didn't realize how entitled that expectation is/was until now. I'm glad for the lesson(s).

Gratefully yours,

Mariamma
